PREORDER Final Gravity, A Beer Zine Issue 10
Issue 10 of Final Gravity, a print beer zine that shares personal, human-centered stories from the world of beer, is now available for preorder.
Additional photos of this issue will be added to this listing soon.
Rather than a typical glossy beer mag, Final Gravity is an old school stapled zine, but with paid writing and art. It tells the stories that don’t often make it into the pages of beer magazines, the stories that together weave the fabric of the collective beer experience.
In this issue, Ollie & Avery Kaplan look back at the past and present of queer resistance to bigotry in beer, examining both the legendary boycott of Coors in the 1970s and the Dylan Mulvaney/Bud Light fiasco of 2023.
Michelle Turner tells the story of Venus, a collaboration beer project that saw Black women from Atlanta’s beer scene brewing unique beers on their own terms.
Recent Narratively True Romance Writing Prize-winner Maggie Hart writes about hiking the Andes, nearly falling in love with her tour guide over shared bottles of Cusqueña, and what is lost and what remembered when we say goodbye.
Editor David Nilsen profiles Our Culture Brewing, who are taking an unconventional but smart approach to opening a brewery, and who want to tell the story of both Southern agriculture and Black joy in the beer scene.
Here’s the complete list of stories in this issue:
Hasta la Raiz Collaboration for Immigrants by Melinda Guerra
In the Time of Cusqueña by Maggie Hart
We Redefine What’s Possible: Venus Beer Collaboration by Michelle Turner
Cracks. by Justin R.L. Hemminger
Brewing Boycotts: LGBTQ+ Resistance to Bigotry in Beer by Ollie & Avery Kaplan
Almaza, Momento of a Life in Lebanon by J.D. Harlock
The South Has Something to Say: Our Culture Brewing by David Nilsen
Returning to Shawshank at the Phoenix Brewing Company by Carmone Macfarlane
Saison as Relationship Barometer by Rachel Labella
Artist Showcase: Jacque Irizarry
Pet Spotlight: Cricket, Weezy, & Ollie
For each issue of Final Gravity, we select a non-profit working in or around the beer and hospitality industries to support financially. This issue’s beneficiary is Freedom for Immigrants. Freedom for Immigrants is a national nonprofit working to end immigration detention in the United States and build a system rooted in freedom, dignity, and human rights.
We believe passionately in the Final Gravity project, in the importance of independent print media, and in the DIY tradition of zine publishing. We hope you’ll enjoy this issue of Final Gravity.
This zine is 8.5” x 5.5”, 56 full-color pages, and staple-bound. Despite being a grassroots, DIY zine, it features paid writing and artwork.
